The prints of Andrew Turnbull are a reflection of his views and love of the city. Each work is a celebration of areas and feelings gained within the London Metropolis.
Recent work explores the contrasting surfaces, patterns and perspective within the city, looking at the relationship between the buildings and their surroundings. Andrew is especially interested in construction sites and areas that are showing some distress. Prints such as “Canary Construct” focus on the tension between the unfinished smooth iron skeleton and the tessellating windows in the towers behind.
To enhance these surfaces and areas he uses different qualities of imagery to recapture this man made tension. Juxtaposing the crisp detail of photography against the smooth pure color, created by traditional silkscreen.
Artist Statement: The city is a thriving explosion of power, movement, pattern, and life. It is an open book full of colour, perspective and repetition. The buildings that grow within it, towering above us all and dwarf everything around them hold an amazing sense of respect. They stand so firm with enormous, seemingly endless facades holding any number of tessellating patterns. They still manage to create very quiet individual spaces, between one another. Dark voids that take you away from the busy street only yards away. These streets run into one another and eventually disappear into the distance.
