Christopher Bond

BA Fine Art, Central Saint Martins, London

Christopher Bond explores the use of text and language within paintings of a self-critical, self-aware agenda. Whilst often using pre-existent rhetoric’s such as; book covers, puzzles, letters or simply passages of text- the work presents itself as having both a speculative affinity as well as an irreverence towards the ideals the work deals with and furthermore that which he references. The works casts a similar double bind upon its very own medium of painting, as well as object-hood itself. However, a playful secret sympathy is always apparent, by way of the works very means.

Whilst focusing on ideals of criticality and art reference, common themes such as philosophy and existentialism are explored, along with humour and satire, parody and pastiche, authorship and identity, culture and institution.

The work concerns itself with conceptualist principles, text and language being paramount in its visual and theoretical guise, yet working on canvas exploring colour, composition within the works visual language; the work has an evident lasting love for traditional painting and art making.

Bonds work has often been seen to manifest differing juxtapositions, often paradoxical and this epitomises the works own knowing criticality upon itself as well as the culture in which it resides in. The works ongoing narrative surrounding its own placement contextually- exemplifies the works self-aware agenda.

Graduating with a First Class Honours from Central Saint Martins and Winner of the Kate Barton Award for painting 2003, Bond widely exhibited in- group exhibitions whilst attending C.S.M and since then he has gone on to exhibit both in London and Glasgow.
